CentOS Dojo in Bucharest

Salut,

In data de 6 septembrie va avea loc un CentOS Dojo la Bucuresti. Evenimentul va avea loc la Bucharest TechHub si este dedicat pentru administratorii de sistem cu experienta pe urmatoarele distributii de Linux - CentOS / Red Hat Enterprise Linux / Fedora.

El va incepe la ora 09:30 si va consta in 6 sesiuni / discutii tehnice a cate 45 de minute + intrebari.

Nou release a distributiei romano-britanice sora vitrega cu noi
( numai dupa tata)

Stella imbina stabilitatea unei distributii server (CentOS) cu
utilitatea unei distributii desktop prin mediile Stella-Base,si Nux-desktop
Traditia impune un GTK2 deci si 6.4 vine cu gnome2 ,amantii de gnome classic,

Am incercat sa instalez din nou Windows pe hda1 dupa care pe hdb1
Instalarea decurge normal dar dupa reboot apare pe fond negru windows xp si gata nu mai merge mai departe.
Momentan functioneaza numai Mandriva 2008.1 pe hdb9.
Cum sa fac ca am un windows pe hdb1 ?

problema cu flash player in chromium rosa 2012 lts

in chromium nu functioneaza flash player cum pot instala pluginul in mandriva functiona fara probleme in rosa nu si inca o problema pe care am observato in mai multe distributii linux( linux mint, mandriva ,rosa etc..) browserul chrome dupa ce este instalat nu se deschide ,nu vrea sa porneasca in schimb chromium se deschide

problema tv-maxe

salutare linuxisti,de cateva luni sant si eu printre voi,am testat mai multe distributii,ubuntu,mint,fedora,centos,suse,pclinuxos.am nevoie pentru acasa nu pentru server,sant mare fan de tv online,am instalat doar pe mint si ubuntu tv-maxe unde mia mers doar ca se misca greu,acuma miam instalat pclinuxos kde 2012.02 pentru ca is innebunit dupa aceasta distributie dar nu stiu sa instalez tv-maxe aici,am downladat varianta .rpm de la v3n3rix si nu stiu cum se instaleaza,dupa ce sa descarcat mia aparut jos o fereastra ca sa terminat descarcarea si am dat acolo ACTIVARE si cu toate astea nu gasesc tv-maxe in synapticu pachet manager ca sa il instalez,am instalat la fel team viewer si a mers lam gasit,ok,am dat dublu clik pe tv-maxe .rpm si open witch pachet manager si zice ceva ca se deschide numai cu root ceva de genu habar nu am,am rugamintea daca stiti vreunu sa ma rezolvati sa imi instalez si eu tv maxe prin team viewer sant dispus astept pe messenger la id meu neamtmischu va rog eu

am cautat pe google si am gasit tot felu de variante si nu stiu cum,am reusit gsopcast si sopcast pentru ca le aveam in pachet manager

Este un remix pe CentOS 6.2 + actualizari cu DM Gnome 2.28 .
Un proiect 100% romanesc ( cu influente de Guiness , Tennents si Strongbow Gold :D )
si pe care incerc sa-l sustin si eu /noi .
Deci daca sint curiosi care iubesc gnome2 ( 2.28 ultimul intradevar stabil ) si un sistem mai mult stabil decit
cutting edge , linistea unei server oriented distro cu remix ptr desktop, deci un OS calm si fara mari surprize ,
construit pe surse din red-hat, si ce esta mai fain BAZAT PE RPM va invit sa-l testati.
Mediile in afara de bacporturile lui Lucian , care a backportat aproape tot DAG ( un fel de plf , ptr cei care nu stiu ),
am si eu un mediu de suport mai mult ptr jocuri si multimedia.
Orice feedback e binevenit.

The regional government of Extremadura in Spain has announced the release of LinEx 2011, a Debian-based distribution designed for deployment in government offices and educational institutions in the province. According to the release announcement (in Spanish) the product is for users who seek a Linux distribution that is easy-to-use, robust and well-supported. LinEx 2011 is based on Debian 6.0.3 and features an intuitive system installer which includes an option to install extra applications according to the user's needs. Another new feature of the release is the possibility to transform the system into a multimedia box for professional video, audio and graphics editing or into a developer's workstation. Also, the system allows easy installation of a great variety of games for all age groups.

fara windows in structurile publice se poate , dovezile sint peste tot, si chiar renteaza ....altfel nu vad de ce un guvern regional
ar dezvolta o distro.... Deci nu iese in pierdere din punct de vedere al bilantului financiar....

Viitorul java si linux?(in special Mandriva)

Am auzit ca cica la ora actuala sau in viitorul nu prea indepartat vom spune adio lui sun java .Cica au schimbat "licenta "( nu stiu la ce se refera ).Ati auzit si voi asa ceva sau sunt doar zvonuri.Daca nu v a mai fi java cum vom mai rula noi utilizatorii linux atatea aplicatii care folosesc java + browserele ( ma refer la site-urile care au java), sau poate vor faca baietii ceva genul libbre office dupa ce openoffice a fost preluat de alta firma .Mie mi se pare o reala problema pentru viitorul linuxului in general .

Distro testing marathon - Sabayon - days 2 & 3

Today is my last day of the distro testing marathon and also the last day with Sabayon. Below are my final conclusions regarding Sabayon and the whole distro testing marathon. Being a person, my opinions are subjective but I've tried to be impartial.

Sabayon - final thoughts

Yesterday a friend told me that I could use equo to sort the mirrors in order to get the faster ones. So I did and it was radically different, the whole installation process of packages went much faster compared to the previous day when I've updated the system in about 50 minutes (626 packages).

After the update something happened in KDE, at login instead of the usual sound there was just hissing and scrambled sounds. Oh, and I've managed to crash Plasma once! I was fiddling with KTorrent and after I've minimized it Plasma died on me but it restarted almost instantly.

A good thing about the Nvidia driver found in the repositories is that it had the 32bit-compat libs, something that missed on Fedora.

About the RAM consumed by the system and KDE after a cold start it's a fairly decent 530 MB.

Oh, the update notifier applet is still annoying. After the desktop loads it automatically checks for updates and it keeps popping-up for 3-4 times to tell me that the system is up to date. Same thing goes with the Nepomuk notification, it still pops-up randomly.

One last thing about the package management. The package installation process is very fast but in the same time CPU-consuming. Well, I guess that's the sacrifice for the speed, but still I don't know that this is a good thing when running on the battery of a laptop.

After these three days I can say that Gentoo is a viable distro, it's stable, fast, good-looking and loaded with fresh apps. Still, I don't know if it is a good choice for a laptop. Maybe it would need further testing to see what's the power consumption.

Final conclusions

Phew! Finally, the marathon has come to an end! It felt good to get a breath of fresh air testing the three distros and it also was a interesting experience which gave me a larger perspective on the Linux world.

If it would be to do a top of the distros I've tested it would look like this:

Fedora
Sabayon
LMDE

Why? Well, check the other posts I've wrote in my previous days and you'll get your answer hopefully.

I hope this will help you in a way or the other to get a glimpse on how these distro are and chose according to your needs!

Distro testing marathon - Sabayon - day 1/3

My third distro which I'm testing on this marathon is Sabayon. It's somewhat different than other distros that I'm used too, at least from the package management point of view, Sabayon being a Gentoo child on this matter. I had the opportunity to test Gentoo some months ago when I fiddled with my PandaBoard. Now I'll try for the next three days to get acquainted to Sabayon and see how easy is compared to Gentoo which IMHO is too time-consuming.

Installation

I've downloaded and used for installation the Sabayon_Linux_6_amd64_K.iso image. I've noticed that there was an option in the menu to go straight to Installation but I was too excited to see it in action so I've booted in Live mode. That proved to be a big mistake because I almost got a hearth attack! The boot sound (more like song) scared the hell out of me! The room was quiet and then suddenly… boom! After I grabbed my heart from the floor I've started the installer. It got familiar, the anaconda installer, like Fedora, no big fuss. A nice thing, I had the option to remove the unwanted language files and so I did. The installation took a while longer than Fedora and LMDE.

Configuration

After the first boot I've noticed that the Nvidia driver was already there. After the desktop was completely loaded I saw that there were no errors related to the UID/GID and I thought that maybe the installer knew automagically my old UID/GID and set them accordingly. Well, it wasn't the case, the UID/GID was once again 1000/1001 and even if I've tried to modify them back in /etc/passwd and /etc/group it was a no joy, there was an error about kstartupconfig4 not being able to do something… and KDE didn't load. So, back to 1000/1001! Sabayon has as default browser Chromium. With this it killed two birds with one stone because first, you have a browser and second it had flash-player already installed! So, no need for flash installatiion there.

One more nice thing, the repositories have a plethora of packages, like Skype, Opera, flash-player (yes, I'm talking mainly about the non-free ones).

One bad thing about the repositories is the speed. Entropy doesn't know anything about geolocation or such in order to get me the closest and maybe fastest mirrors. I've managed to set a fast repository and now it's much better. Still, there should be some mechanism of setting the fastest mirrors for your system.

Apps

There are plenty of apps, there's already LibreOffice installed for your office needs, VLC, Clementine and even XBMC for multimedia and so on. One thing that I don't really like is why do we have the QT-devel tools (Designer, Linguist, Assistant)?! I really don't get that one. Instead we miss an app for torrents like KTorrent.

Random

The update notification applet keeps popping up when an update process is active. It keeps nagging me that “there are x updates avaiable” on and on. Maybe it should be disabled on the duration of the update process.

Another one annoying pop-up is with Akonadi complaining about Nepomuk whic is not started. Well, I want Nepomuk/Strigi off so it should stop keep popping-up at random times. I know, this is a KDE problem but still, maybe the Sabayon team could look into it and mute Akonadi or provide some mechanism for that.

Same as LMDE, Sabayon had the system bell problem. I had to blacklist pcspkr module.

Conclusion

Sabayon seems to be a well-built distro which tries to make Gentoo accessible to the dumb user. It has a blazing fast boot speed and very nice looks. Tomorrow I'll get back with more, so stay tuned!

Distro testing marathon - LMDE - day 3/3

Once again, the third day came! This was my final day with LMDE installed. In case you've missed the previous two day you can find them here and here.

Hibernate/Suspend

I almost forgot to test Hibernate and Suspend but something came up and I had to leave laptop alone so instead of shutting it down I've clicked the “Hibernate” option. After I came home again and started the laptop… surprise! It booted like nothing happened right from the beginning. Hibernation failed so I've tried once again, same thing. Fortunately, the Suspend function works perfectly.

Beep

A thing that I forgot to tell you earlier was the system bell which annoyed me some time after I had installed LMDE. I had to blacklist pcspkr and fiddle with gnome-alsamixer.

KDE

As I've told you before I've installed KDE just for fun. It's the 4.6.4 version which is nice and it works ok. Still, it seems that the integration isn't very polished but is understandable since LMDE is Gnome centric.

Conclusions

All in all LMDE is a good distro. It's fast, stable, easy with resources, very polished and with a kinda unique menu. The repositories are abundant and fresh with apps ready to be installed. It has its downsides too but they are easily fixable. Hats off for the people behind it who try to make Debian accessible to the common user!
